Headphone DA

Indlæg af franco143 »

Hello,
I want a mobile setup with mastering grade headphone monitering converters. Are there any AD/DA interfaces with mastering grade headphone monitoring or do I need to start thinking about seperate DA headphone amps/converters? I'm working in the box using Audeze LCD X headphones.
I understand that mastering on headphones is not ideal but this is just for when im not in a studio environment.
Thank you,
Rosd

I seem to recall Benchmark DAC-1 sounding pretty good with a pair of Grado 325i headphones.
I'd check that out, if you have the possibility. Motu and RME might also be worth checking out.

I second that - RME and Grado, although I use Sony MDR-7506 (as Andrew Scheps does). They are totally workable if you know them

Thanks Jakobole and Joachip. I will check these out. Any particular motu or rme model?

Here's the Benchmark https://www.thomann.de/dk/benchmark_dac3_hgc_b.htm

I must admit that I have not tried any of them, but this SPL one tickles my fancy (I have an SPL monitor controller, and it sounds great)

And the of course, you cannot go wrong with Prism and Lynx

However, if it is for working on the go, I would find all of these options too bulky. This might be adequate https://www.thomann.de/dk/apogee_one_386078.htm

.. i can highly recommend the RME ADI-2 Pro, though it's not exactly cheap. Besides great AD/DA (2 in / 4 out) it also features two extremely well designed headphone amps, that can be driven from individual sources - or used to power balanced headphones. Specs here: https://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/adi_2-pro.php

The unit also doubles as my monitor-controller / system-eq in the studio, and i have nothing bad to say about it! Please note that while the unit has USB, i'd recommend running it as a stand-alone converter (via AES or SPDIF), since it does not feature monitor-mixing and such.

If you need a full interface, then the RME BabyFace Pro could be an option. It has a very respectable headphone amp - but it's not reference class like the ADI-2 Pro ..

I also found this which is supposed to have a good DA and headphone monitoring as well as AD. Anyone used it?

franco: Currently I'm using the Motu 2408 mk3, which also drives those Grados quite well despite those being just 32 ohms. I don't know if the smaller USB powered devices have the same amount of muscle, which may be relevant to check out because the Audeze LCD X headphones are even more tricky to drive at just 20 ohms. This puts quite a strain on the headphone amp.

I think the most pleasant sounding headphone amp I've ever tried was this Vincent KHV-111MK, but as you can see, it might be impractical for a portable setup:

Hi, thanks for this info. I'm leaning towards this rme more and more. If I'm just working on headphones and not through speakers, would USB be OK? I will only be using it with a 13" MacBook Pro.

Thanks.

Looks and probably sounds lush, but a bit too big to fit in my sound bag!

Indeed. :)

I just checked the manual of Motu Ultralite 4, and it seems to accept headphones all the way down to 16 ohm. So that might be worth checking out.

The device is class-compliant and will do low-latency operation as well as any other RME interface out there. It also has stellar line-level inputs, so it should serve you just fine. If you are not interested in the inputs, there is the ADI-2 DAC (https://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/adi_2-dac.php) which performes to similar specifications, but without the AD section and without seperate DACs for the headphone output. Also a fair bit cheaper ..
